Dear Parishioners, This weekend begins the joyful season of Advent which is the season of expectant joy. During the first two weeks of Advent, we contemplate the second coming of Christ. Nobody knows when this day will happen, but we know that when it does, our Lord Jesus Christ will return to Earth in glory and bring with him, all who have lived a godly life. During these two weeks, it is good for us to take a little time to review our own lives and, if and when necessary, to make some minor changes. During the last two weeks of Advent, we prepare our hearts and minds for the expectant joy of the Nativity of Christ. Our thoughts go back to that day, more than 2000 years ago in the little crib, when Christ came among us to change the world forever. All Christians are part of this change. We are part of the new covenant as we, disciples of the Lord, bring forth the message of Good News. Naturally, Christmas is a very busy time with many things to do but let us be sure to take a little time for ourselves so that we can truly celebrate the birth of the Redeemer. People frequently ask me, how often should a Catholic go to confession? The answer is as often as necessary. However, I suggest twice a year and the best times are Advent and Lent, in preparation for Christmas and Easter. It is, of course, imperative should one commit a mortal sin to go immediately. I encourage all our CCD parents who have children from 3rd grade up to come as a family to confession. Parents with teenagers, please come also. It is very important that we teach our children Catholic traditions so as young people move away from home that they remember the mercy of God as seen in confession and they know that God is always here to cleanse them and love them unconditionally. This year, Fr. Alex, Fr. Hubert and Fr. Mike will help us with confessions on Tuesday, November 29 and as has been our tradition, we will be available from 6-8:30 pm. I invite you my beloved parishioners to come during a time that best suits your schedule and truly prepare your minds and hearts for the joy of Christmas. As chaplain of the Order of Malta, I am honored to present our parishioner Joseph McGovern as the newly installed Knight of the Order. Joe was installed by Cardinal Dolan on Friday, November 18. As a concelebrating priest, I placed Joe in my Mass intentions as the bishops and priests of our Order continue to grow with strong Catholic men and women who are all about the church, visit the prisons, bring Holy Communion to the sick and support those who are ill. Congratulations to Joseph McGovern!
